Talk Therapy
Traditional “Talk Therapy” also referred to as Psychotherapy is a “person centered” approach which begins with developing a “therapeutic rapport” (a trusting relationship) between therapist and client. The therapist uses a compassionate and non-judgmental approach to listening and asking questions in order to guide the client in self-identifying maladaptive thinking or behaviors, which have usually developed as a result of past relationships or experiences. Increased self-awareness allows the client to begin consciously shifting and changing thought patterns and behaviors which no longer serve them. In my view the benefits of successful psychotherapy are that the client feels that they are finally “steering their own ship”, empowered and in charge of their path to healing and happiness.

Mindfulness
“Mindfulness” is a technique that has its roots in Buddhist
meditation practices and has evolved over time as a widespread secular practice since the 1970s. Studies over many decades have shown both the physical and mental health benefits of this practice. Mindfulness means developing a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, non-judgmental and
nurturing lens. It is an approach to the reduction of unwanted feeling states that helps the client train their mind to remain present, rather than constantly ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. Practicing mindfulness involves acceptance, paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them - without believing that there’s a “right” or “wrong” way to think or feel in a given moment. I have a personal mindfulness practice and I enjoy introducing clients to this extremely effective tool, which is particularly helpful for managing stress and anxiety.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
EFT also known as “Tapping” is a technique that stimulates acupressure points for emotion by tapping on these points while focusing on situations that represent various levels of emotional distress. Many clients find this approach helpful because it does not require talking about all the details of an emotional issue, which can sometimes cause a client to re-experience the pain and
suffering in a way that is not helpful to moving forward on a journey to healing. The AMA does not yet endorse EFT, but the British Medical Association (BMA) has long endorsed this technique. I am part way through a certification through the BMA, and I am enthusiastic about introducing and working with clients using this powerful tool. Tapping, like mindfulness, is a technique
that clients can use in their life outside the therapy office to mitigate stress and anxiety among other challenges.

~Nick Ortner ( The Tapping Solution)
Expressive Therapy
Expressive therapy uses various forms of creative expression such as art, writing, music and dance to explore, express and transform difficult emotions. I have an undergraduate degree in Expressive Therapy. Though I do not have a large studio to accommodate dance, large instruments or huge canvasses, I enjoy working with
art, writing music and movement on a smaller scale with clients who are interested in exploring this modality to augment the therapeutic process.

“The task of therapy is not to eliminate suffering but to give a voice to it, to find a form in which it can be expressed. Expression is itself transformation; this is the message that the arts can bring to healing.”
~Jonno White (adapted)

Creative Visualization
Also known as Guided Meditation, Creative Visualization is a specific meditation technique in which the facilitator guides the client through a multi-sensory experience using their voice, and sometimes music, to create visual suggestions, altering mental imagery which can contribute to positive emotional changes. I enjoy working with clients using this technique, especially if they
have found meditation difficult or if it is new to them. It is also a powerful tool for a client that wants to take a deeper dive into exploring their inner world.
